Quoth the '80s fan, nevermore: See John Cusack as Edgar Allen Poe
Much I marvelled this ungainly blog to hear discourse so plainly ... (Seriously, that's all I can remember from The Raven). John Cusack has taken on some unusual roles over the years (to dilute the '80s movie roles that he seems to detest so much). But playing Edgar Allen Poe in The Raven might be a new high. Or low. Either way we'll know on March 9, 2012. I'm betting it's a success -- at least critically, because an early spring release date doesn't bode well for the box office.
The role of Poe was something Cusack had to fight for, USA Today reports. "I'm always dying to do more character-driven work, and it is hard to find the right canvas," he told the newspaper. The Raven, he insists, "is a very rare combination of both blockbuster and art house."
Cusack calls Poe the godfather of goth. "He was quite a ladies' man and a bit of a rock star." (Sorta like Cusack himself.)
Fans will get their first crack at Cusack and the cast, which includes Luke Evans, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Jackson-Cohen, at San Diego Comic Con on July 22.
