R.E.M. releases final single: 'We All Go Back To Where We Belong'
R.E.M. has composed a lovely goodbye note for all their fans. It's a tune called We All Go Back To Where We Belong, and it's their final single after announcing their breakup earlier this fall.
I can taste the ocean on your skin
That is where it all began
I dreamed that we were elephants
Out of sight, clouds of dust
And woke up thinking we were free
The tune, recorded in July will appear with two other unreleased tracks on their upcoming boxset Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011, due out Nov. 15.
"It sounds a bit like the closing credits of a movie, a happy ending where the heroes head off into the sunset," Rolling Stone says in a short review, where you can hear the song as well. "As the tune winds down, Michael Stipe sings 'Is this really what you want?' As much as we'd all love for the answer to be 'no,' you can hear in his voice that he's finally ready to move on, even though he's overwhelmed by sentiment."
