Robert Palmer - musician, star, hedonist
OK, let's beat him up a little for stealing John and Andy Taylor from Duran Duran to form the limp and languid Power Station in the mid-80s. Awful, awful group. And it broke up the best new wave/power pop band of the 80s! (Well, after that singles "Wild Boy", maybe that's not such a bad thing.)
But all is forgiven in the mid-80s after the 2-inches-short-of-porn videos for Addicted to Love and Simply Irresistible. Gangs of identically clad female "musicians" in heavy makeup swaying back and forth to otherwise dull rock songs? Brilliant!
Alas, Robert Palmer died in 2003 in Paris of a heart attack. Though he shares a birthday with Dolly Parton, Janis Joplin and Phil Everly, his place in music and video history is all his own.
