'Rock of Ages' fills cast; filming to begin in Florida
The '80s stage musical Rock of Ages finally has a complete cast for a Hollywood big-screen adaptation. The coveted lead role of Drew (played on stage by American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis) will be played by Diego González Boneta. ... Okay, so picking someone who is only known for the lame remake of 90210 isn't necessarily a bad move.
On to bigger names:
- Alec Baldwin will play Dennis, the grizzled owner of the Bourbon Room bar, where most of the story takes place.
- Tom Cruise will be Stacee Jaxx, the bratty, overpampered rocker seeking a solo career.
- Julianne Hough will play Sherrie, Drew's love interest.
- Russell Brand will play Lonnie, the wise-cracking narrator and Bourbon Room employee.
Shooting begins May 19 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Look for the movie to hit theaters in June 2012.
As for the disappointment from stage fans who were drawn to Maroulis as the lead character?
"Constantine was perfection as Drew in the play," director Adam Shankman told 24 Frames. "But the truth of the matter is that I cast at age, and I wanted someone who doesn't have to act 20 or 23 but actually is 20 or 23. The authenticity of someone actually being that age is important."
Maroulis reportedly is being offered a smaller, unspecified role.
