Rock of Ages podcast: Sunset Strip's music, magic and megalomania
When Tom Cruise was cast as delusional hair metal god Stacee Jaxx in the movie version of Rock of Ages, a lot of people were shaking their heads in bewilderment. Cruise, who in a month turns 50, was more known for jumping on Oprah's couch than jumping into crowds of music fans. And can he even sing? Nobody knew. "Total fail," people predicted. Box-office desperation.
Turns out, we were all wrong. Cruise is unequaled in Rock of Ages, which opens in theaters today. And while his singing at times seems only slightly less digitized than Alvin the Chipmunk, he's an entertaining guy in front of and away from the microphone.
Is Stacee Jaxx still a self-destructive, egomaniacal figure of tragedy? You bet. And maybe that's why the character is so important to any story about the Sunset Strip. Worship him? No way. Admire the acting? Sure, that's safe.
