Rolling Stone's list of best punk bands is total bollocks

The ClashRemember when Rolling Stone used to be a respected music magazine? Of course you don't. Because we were all probably 3 years old at the time. The last really epic thing the mag did was put the fake band Stillwater on the cover, and that was in the movie Almost Famous.

Still, their "Best Of" lists are usually must-reads. (Best album? Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's. Best guitarist? Hendrix.) But this week's Best Punk Bands of All Time is a little sketchy. Actually, it appears it could have been a reader-generated list, in which case all bets are off.

The Rolling Stone list is nearly dominated by bands that graced the '80s: Bad Brains (#10), Social Distortion (#9), The Misfits (#8), Black Flag (#7), The Dead Kennedys (#5), The Clash (#2). And the ones from before our decade -- Iggy and the Stooges, Sex Pistols, Ramones -- still had an incredible influence on the music that followed them.

But there's no accounting for the No. 1 band on the Rolling Stone list of best punk bands of all time:

Green Day.

Green Day ... is a punk band? That's like saying Cinderella's Castle in the Magic Kingdom is an actual medieval fortress.

Next time, RS, do the work yourself. And we'll save the Green Day jokes for the next MTV Video Music Awards show.
