Shall we play the remake game: 'WarGames' is up next
Absolutely nothing about computing, global thermonuclear war and the Cold War has remained the same since 1983's WarGames. So you know what that means: Remake time!
According to Entertainment Weekly, MGM has signed Seth Gordon about remaking the Matthew Broderick flick, which was the fifth biggest movie back in '83. (Can you name the others? ... In order, it's Return of the Jedi, Terms of Endearment, Flashdance and Trading Places.)
"I love the original. I’m a bit of a hacker fanatic, and know a fair bit about that industry and cyber crime and cyber warfare," Gordon told Collider.com. "I have a real point-of-view on the material and how things have changed. And also, I think the politics of the world have changed in really fascinating ways since 1983. There’s no longer a monolithic evil empire somewhere, spreading a different philosophy of life. That doesn’t exist. It’s a much more complicated, nuanced, political world we’re in, and I think that actually makes for a more interesting plot to tell. Frankly, cyber attack is a lot more real."
There's no script yet, and the casting hasn't begun. EW says Daniel Radcliffe would be a great choice for the lead role of David Lightman. Harry the Hacker? Sure. Why not. I'd love to see Broderick come back and play the role of Professor Stephen Falken, but that's wishful thinking.
