'Steel Magnolias' remake coming to Lifetime TV

steel-magnolias-440.jpgSteel Magnolias was the ultimate chick-flick in 1989 -- heck, probably in all the '80s -- so it's a bit of a surprise that nobody has thought of remaking it ... until now.

Pop Candy's Whitney Matheson tips us off that Lifetime network has a TV remake of Steel Magnolias planned for this fall; an online trailer is already out. (see below).

The big difference: Instead of Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah and Julia Roberts, we'll get Queen Latifah as M'Lynn, Alfre Woodard as Ouiser, Phylicia Rashad as Clairee, Adepero Oduye as Annelle, and Condola Rashad as Shelby. (Yes, Condola is the real-life daughter of Phylicia, which makes for clever casting for those who know the storyline.)

According to the New York Post, the movie will be set in 2012 but feature the same plot and a lot of the same dialog. (Can we also assume the male-bashing will be stronger than ever too? It was over the top in 1989. Poor Tom Skerritt. Still love you, Viper!)

"Surprisingly, Lifetime has a huge African-American audience," producer Neil Meron told the Post. "They want to honor that audience and give them more."
