Sunday earworm: Thomas Dolby's 'One of Our Submarines'
Mention Thomas Dolby to me, and I'll tell you a dozen interesting stories (well, interesting to me anyway). When I interviewed him a few years ago, I did days and days of research on him. Probably too much. I knew all the answers to the questions I was going to ask, and that takes away from the fun of talking to one of your '80s heros.
The Dolby podcast, which you can still listen to online today, is still one of my favorites, because I tried to pack it full of fun music and educate co-host Sean Daly on the finer points of electronica in the '80s. I succeeded in only one of those two endeavors. Some people just can't have the Phil Collins kicked out of them. (Truth be told, I rarely listen to podcasts where I interview someone -- I just can't stand the sound of my voice in those situations. Help.)
I'd love to give you all the background stories on 1982's One of Our Submarines, but my friend Thomas is actually going to do that for you before the song begins. This live performance, from his comeback Sole Inhabitant tour, is one of my all-time faves. And it's today's Stuck in the '80s earworm.
