Survivor took its eye off the tiger in 1983
Survivor could live forever off the royalties of Eye of the Tiger, High on You and The Search is Over, but Survivor is much more than those songs.
After the breakout success of Eye of the Tiger, Survivor’s follow up album Caught in the Game failed to carry the momentum and the title song peaked at No. 77 in 1983.
Caught in the Game was the last album that original lead singer Dave Bickler and his patented beret appeared on, but don’t feel too bad for Bickler. He would later strike advertising gold as the singing voice of Budweiser’s Real Mean of Genius commercials. I always preferred Bickler over Jimi Jamison on Survivor vocals, but it’s a lead-singer debate that really doesn’t have the same heat compared to Sammy Hagar vs. David Lee Roth.
The Caught in the Game video features a game-board theme and the blistering guitar work of Frankie Sullivan, one of the ‘80s most under appreciated creator of guitar licks. Surivor is still plugging away but with hardly any original members of the band.
