Tom Cruise won't be anyone's wingman in 'Top Gun 2'
Remember when we said that a Top Gun 2 was in the works? One that would only feature Tom Cruise in a smaller role, perhaps as a grizzled flight instructor? Turns out that was bad intell.
The screenwriter of the sequel, Christopher McQuarrie, has e-mailed New York magazine with the following scoop: "There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role."
Nice of you to hog the spotlight again, Maverick! Personally, I'd like them to bring back Goose. Yeah, he's still dead, of course, but they could do the Jedi trick that Anthony Edwards used in Revenge of the Nerds 2. Okay, on second thought, just bring back Iceman. Val Kilmer needs a good role.
Kelly McGillis is probably out of the question. Still, I have a storyline for her. Remember when she professed undying love for Maverick and promised to move to San Diego to be with him? Well, shortly afterward, it turns out she was dating a wealthy, commercial airline pilot at the same time. She dumps Mav and returns to live a loveless but pampered life in some dirtwater Rust Belt burg. Maverick is crushed and pines away for her until this sequel starts, providing his salvation. ... Boy, does that sound familiar.
