The '80s weren't all Brat Pack movies and action-adventure blockbusters. We managed to sneak in some quality education in with our entertainment over those 10 years. I was reminded by that this morning when 1988's Gorillas in the Mist came on cable, thus enabling me to put the weekend on hold for a few hours and just enjoy Sigourney Weaver is a serious role again.
Weaver's turn as naturalist Dian Fossey has to top one of the top 3 roles in her career -- and maybe one of the top 5 bio-pics of the '80s. The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Actress in a Leading Role for Weaver. Alas, it won none. Weaver lost to Jodie Foster (The Accused) for that statue, and was actually nominated for a second Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Working Girl (she lost to Geena Davis in Accidental Tourist).
