Top 10 bio-pics: No. 6 ... Bird
Is this list of the Top 10 Bio-Pics of the '80s ever going to end? We're only halfway through with today's No. 6 pick.
6. BIRD (1988): Only a few years removed from his role as Charles Jefferson in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Forest Whitaker plays jazz great Charlie "Bird" Parker in this dark drama directed by Clint Eastwood. It won the Oscar for best sound and a Cannes award for best actor for Whitaker. Eastwood, a lifelong jazz fan, had been a Parker fan since seeing him perform live in 1945.
Trivia: The movie was originally intended for Richard Pryor eight years earlier.
What critics said: "This is a world where breakfast is a meal held in the late afternoon, where hotel rooms are home, where work is play, and everything else is work. Whitaker occupies this world as a large, friendly, sometimes taciturn man who tries to harm nobody and who cannot understand why the world would not let him play his music. Neither can we." - Roger Ebert
Signature line: "I owe Dizzy everything...except a phone call."
