Top Gun sequel has crashed and burned following Tony Scott's death

top-gun-bike.jpgGreat balls of fire! I shouldn't joke, but it's looking like any plans for Top Gun 2 are grounded. Turned in their wings. Lost their edge. The New York Times says director Tony Scott's death means the project has lost its wingman.

On top of that, plans to release a 3-D version of the original 1986 film are also looking cloudy. Paramount Pictures, the Times says, doesn't want to be seen as turning the film's release into a memorial. But the conversion is already complete so letting it just gather dust on the shelf doesn't seem right either.

As for the sequel, sources say Scott was scouting locations for Top Gun 2, which reports said would star Tom Cruise this time playing a flying instructor, just weeks before he killed himself by jumping off a bridge near Los Angeles.
