Wednesday earworm: Simple Minds 'Waterfront'

Simple Minds' Waterfront is simply majestic. I've heard a dozen versions of it, but it always sounds different and more regal with each new performance video. And the song has been buzzing around my head since I got off the phone with lead singer Jim Kerr a few hours ago.

I told Jim that I remembered the exact date of one of the greatest live performances I'd ever attended: March 26, 1986, in Tampa at the old Curtis Hixon Hall. Simple Minds was the headliner, of course, and it was the first or second stop in their U.S. tour supporting Once Uoon a Time. As the concert began, Jim just popped up on stage out of nowhere -- the music hadn't even begun -- and yelled hello to the audience. Then the band launched into Waterfront.

Every human being in the ZIP code was immediately in love with the guy. Such is the magic of Jim Kerr and one of his signature live songs.
