Zac Efron cuts loose on 'Footloose'

France_17_Again Zac Efron is bailing on the musical remake of Footloose, saying he doesn't want to be typecast as a cute little song-and-dance kid anymore.

According to, Efron told Paramount that he doesn't want to do any more musicals at this point in his career. "Efron had script approval on the movie and used a rewrite on the screenplay as the loophole to get out of his contract," reports.

The studio says it is still committed to a big-screen production of the Broadway version of the 1984 movie Footloose, which made stars of Kevin Bacon, John Lithgow, Sarah Jessica Parker and Lori Singer. The show opened on Broadway back in 1998 and features many of the same songs as the original movie.

I'm sure '80s fans aren't crying in their wine coolers. But Efron will appear next month in another '80s role. He plays the lead in 17 Again, a closely veiled remake of 18 Again, the 1988 flick starring George Burns and Charlie Schlatter.
