Counting the beat until the weekend? This is your song
It's Friday and whether you are counting down to the end of the work week or counting hours to the end of a cruise, it's time to get the party started and for pure fun there is no better way to get started than to listen to The Swingers and Counting The Beat.
The Swingers were a short-lived band founded by former original Split Enz Phil Judd and in 1981 they had a number one hit in Australia with Counting The Beat. The funny story behind the Counting The Beat video is the reveal that occurs at the end of the video when a throng a people appear and starts dancing with The Swingers. The "dancers" in the video for Counting The Beat were actual party goers on a drinking tour bus that scheduled the video shoot as one their stops. Upon arriving, the tour was told they had 15 minutes to get out and dance. The spontaneity was captured and put in the video and you can see the amusement on Judd's face as the inebriated partiers crash the shoot and start their unscripted role in the video.
For Australians, Counting The Beat is not a Lost and Found song as it has been used countless times in commercials and frequently makes lists of the most beloved songs in Australia pop music history. After working on film scores in the '90s, things went south for Judd as he suffered from mental illness and odd criminal behavior.
