Eileen Brennan of 'Private Benjamin' fame dies at age 80
Eileen Brennan, who scored an Oscar nomination for playing the Army drill captain opposite Goldie Hawn in 1980's Private Benjamin, has died, CNN reports. The actress was 80 when she died Sunday at her California home after fighting bladder cancer.
Fans of '70s movies probably remember Brennan best for The Last Picture Show, The Sting and At Long Last Love. To '80s fans, she was Capt. Doreen Lewis in Private Benjamin (the movie and subsequent TV series) and Mrs. Peacock in Clue (1985). She also had guest spots on Magnum P.I., Taxi, The Love Boat and Newhart. Later, she would appear on multiple episodes of Will & Grace.
Both Hawn and Brennan earned Oscar nominations (lead actress and supporting actress) for Private Benjamin. They lost out to Sissy Spacek (Coal Miner's Daughter) and Mary Steenburgen (Melvin and Howard).
