'Explorers' remake coming soon, but will anyone watch it?
Hollywood has seemingly slowed its mass production of '80s remakes, but they're not entirely done recking the memories of our youth. Next up for a remake: 1985's Explorers.
The Hollywood Reporters says Paramount is working on a low-budget remake, to be produced by the writers behind Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and the TV series Life on Mars. No word on a release date or casting yet.
The original movie is best known for the big screen debuts of Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix, who play neighborhood pals who build a homemade spaceship in their backyard. Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling) was the director. The movie holds a respectable 77 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with one critic calling Explorers "a strange, wounded beast, filled with wonderful sequences and homemade charm, but also confused and anticlimactic."
