First mobile phone call? 40 years ago today

Sadly, it wasn't Wall Street's Gordon Gekko who made the very first mobile phone call, but the model was pretty much exactly the same.

On April 3, 1973, Motorola employee Marty Cooper made the first mobile phone call, using a Motorola DynaTAC to call Bell Labs, reportedly saying "I'm ringing you just to see if my call sounds good at your end."

The phone weighed 2.5 pounds, had a talking life of 35 minutes and took 10 hours to recharge. Its cost? A cool $3,995. Even Gekko wouldn't spend that much.
