For cult classics like Electric Dreams, love is love
As fans of the Stuck in the '80s podcast, we have all learned to know the identity of co-host Steve Spears' favorite cult movies. Ranking high on his list would be Electric Dreams, in part due to the soundtrack featuring one of Spearsy's favorite songs Together In Electric Dreams by Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder. Last year on Movie Week we went deeper in the Electric Dreams soundtrack with Jeff Lynne's Video and today we pull the trifecta with Culture Club and Love Is Love.
1984 might have been the zenith of Culture Club as their 1983 album Colour By Numbers was still producing hits and 1984's Walking Up With The House On Fire produced three more Top 40 hits. Mixed in between during the summer of 1984 was Love Is Love that was included on the Electric Dreams soundtrack. The single was a hit in various countries including Canada where it reached No. 3.
The video for Love Is Love is great fun for fans of Electric Dreams as we follow the rise and fall of computer "Edgar." Highlights of the video includes cameos of a spot on look-alike of Prince Charles and Princess Diane. Only at the end do we get a glimpse of Culture Club's polarizing lead singer Boy George. In total, Culture Club had ten Top 40 hits in the U.S. during the '80s hitting number one once with Karma Chameleon before splitting up in 1986.
Overcoming drug addictions and relationship issues, Culture Club has reunited and in July they will be hitting North America and Florida including an appearance on July 6th at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg.
