Freshies' new start for 2014 with the ever-obscure 'Bouncing Babies'
I always love a song that either name drops another band or song and today's obscure Lost and Found entry is a song that gives us both.
Though this gem escaped my attention back in the ‘80s, SIT follower Dr. Incognito introduced me to this little pop nugget a few years back. The story begins in 1979 when Julian Cope (World Shut Your Mouth) led an English band by the name The Teardrop Explodes and they had an uncharted single called Bouncing Babies that caught the attention of Chris Sievey of the English band The Freshies.
However obtaining a copy of the Bouncing Babies single must have been hard to obtain for Sievey as it provided the inspiration for the 1981 song very wordy title I Can't Get Bouncing Babies by The Teardrop Explodes.
The song is an irresistible earworm with a great piano hook and a happy "Boing, Boing" in the background chorus. The video also offers a brief glimpse of Spievey's paper-mache headed comic alter ego "Frank Sidebottom" that has an arsenal of videos that you can view on Youtube. Even better, sometime in 2014 a major motion picture titled Frank will be released that will chronicle the comic foils of Sievey, The Freshies and Frank Sidebottom. Red hot actor Michael Fassbender will portray Sievey and Maggie Gyllenhall will play the lead female role. It will be interesting to see if Fassbender's success in films like X-Men, Prometheus, Inglorious Basterds and the recent 12 Years as a Slave catapults this little known ‘80s band into the spotlight. Sievey passed away from cancer in 2010.
