Journey, Asia touring together in 2017

Publicity photo

Journey’s pretty fond of saying how well they’re doing on the tour circuit these days - selling out huge gigs even without Steve Perry fronting the band. Of course, it’s easy to sell out an amphitheater when you have bands like Loverboy, Pat Benatar, Heart, Night Ranger and Cheap Trick opening for you.

In 2016, it was the Doobie Brothers. But here’s a new and unusual name for 2017: Asia. The prog-rockers from the UK have announced via Twitter that they’re onboard for a Spring 2017 tour with Journey beginning March 15 in Yakima, Wash., and wrapping up (maybe) on April 4 in Dayton, Ohio.

These days, Asia consists of lead singer/bassist John Wetton, drummer Carl Palmer, keyboardist Geoff Downes with Sam Coulson taking over for Steve Howe on guitar. Could this gig opening for Journey mean that Asia might stop touring as a headliner in much smaller venues? Only time will tell.

So far, these are the only dates. It appears the tour stops in just as it's getting started - just before the Rock Hall of Fame will hold its 2017 induction ceremony in April. Think Journey knew that fact before they booked the gigs?
