Look closely and see an '80s performance by Nicole Kidman in 'Bop Girl'
With the VJ book and the 32nd anniversary of MTV, many are waxing nostalgic about some of early MTV’s finest moments. One vivid memory of early MTV will always be Madonna writhing around in a wedding dress while performing Like A Virgin on the first MTV Awards Show in September of 1984.
A lesser known wedding dress performance is the video for Bop Girl by Australian Pat Wilson. Penned by husband Ross Wilson of the band Mondo Rock, Bop Girl was a No. 2 smash in her native country in 1983, but only reached No. 104 on the U.S. singles chart in early 1984.
While the song is a slice of irresistible bubblegum pop, the video has historical significance as it is the first screen appearance by a 15-year-old Nicole Kidman who appears as a Bop Girl in the last half of the video. It is also rumored that Nicole’s best friend Naomi Watts is another Bop Girl in the video, but it’s unclear whether that is true or just internet fiction. Ross Wilson is also sings backup on the song and appears prominently in the video. Pat Wilson never charted again and is reported to own an organic food store now.
