Never Found in the 80s - Trip Shakespeare
Finally, we close out our live performance week of Never Found bands playing Minneapolis' legendary nightclub First Avenue & 7th Street Entry with the band Trip Shakespeare. Trip Shakespeare was a poppy, trippy, neo-psychedelic band out of Minneapolis. Their songs were just packed with catchy hooks, but mainstream charting success eluded them in the 80s.
I believe I saw their very first performance in the 7th Street Entry. At that time, they were a three-piece band and looking sharp in their matching grey suits. Later on, band leader Matt Wilson's older brother Dan would join the group. Today's song, Beatle, has Dan in the band as they play in the 7th Street Entry. In the video, taken in 1989, you can get a real sense of the intimacy of that room.
In the 90s, Trip Shakespeare did find some charting success with their song Bachelorette off their last major label album Lulu (1991). Shortly after the release of Lulu the band split up. Most of the members went on to other musical projects; most notable was John Munson (bass) and Dan Wilson forming the very successful 90s alternative band Semisonic.
First Avenue & 7th Street Entry and the Minneapolis music scene was definitely more than just Prince.
