Never Found in the '80s: Bad Brains

Originally formed as a jazz fusion band in 1976, these four musicians from Washington D.C. quickly changed musical direction by joining the hardcore punk scene of our nation's capital. Their original name Mind Power was changed to reflect their new sound. They became Bad Brains in 1977.

Bad Brains didn't like being labelled as hardcore punk because they weaved so much more into their sound, including reggae, heavy metal, funk, soul, and hip-hop. They were also much better musicians than most other bands of the hardcore punk scene. This is ably demonstrated in today's selection, the title track of their 1986 album - I Against I.

This song has elements of hardcore, metal and prog rock. It also has some fine musicianship. Band member Dr. Know is a hell of a guitarist.

In the late '80s, the band began to fracture with two of the founding members being replaced, but in 1998 the original lineup reunited under the new name Soul Brains. In 2001, the original name returned and the band is still together.
