Never Found in the '80s: Robyn Hitchcock still a man with a lightbulb head

“Excuse me, Madame, is this your brain?” An apt question asked in the very surreal song The Man with the Lightbulb Head. The song is by the brilliant Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians off their 1985 debut, Fegmania! The album is fantastic! It’s a delightful mix of jangly guitars, distinct vocals, and lyrical weirdness. It’s a crying shame this record and its architect, Robyn Hitchcock, was never found by a larger audience in the '80s.

I’ll just go ahead and say it… I love this album!

Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians produced their music from 1984 until 1994. Prior to working with the Egyptians, Robyn fronted The Soft Boys and also produced solo work. Since 1994, he has continued his solo efforts as well as being part of the indie super group Venus 3 along with Pete Buck of REM, Scott McCaughey of Fresh Young Fellows, and Bill Rieflin of Ministry. Robyn has also collaborated with one of my personal favorites, Andy Partridge of XTC.

Robyn is currently touring with Pete Buck.
