Nothing to smile about in this truly odd Golden Earring video
Golden Earring has two iconic songs in rock radio history with 1974's Rader Love and 1983's Twilight Zone, but forgotten on the dial is When The Lady Smiles and its bold video.
With titillating images and gallows humor, the video was banned by MTV and only made it to No. 76 on the U.S. singles chart in 1984. With unholy desires about a nun and a lobotomy, it is mystifying how a song with a video as politically incorrect as When The Lady Smiles made it through the screening process and was used as a campaign theme song for Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign - but it was. (The scene with the dog at 5:00 mark is sooo wrong.)
While the video may have hampered the sales in the U.S., the song hit No. 3 in Canada and was just another number hit in their home country of the Netherlands. Lead singer Barry Hay helped form the Dutch band back in 1961 and their core lineup since 1970 has remained in tact to this day. Golden Earring churned out five albums in the ‘80s and continued to release albums until as late as 2012.
