Perfect holiday anthem: John Kilzer 'Red Blue Jeans'

VH1 will never do a Behind the Music episode on John Kilzer, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t fit the profile. Kilzer was a ‘70s basketball phenom in the state of Tennessee and played guard for four mostly successful years for at Memphis State. After school, Kilzer entered the world of rock n roll and in 1988, had a No. 12 mainstream rock hit with Red Blue Jeans.

Red Blue Jeans includes the catchy chorus of “Stalin on the wall, Beatles in a box” and was yet another nod to fascination of what was going on behind the Iron Curtain. The building success would come to an end as alcohol played a major part of landing Kilzer in jail. Kilzer sobered up and started studying divinities. Kilzer is now a pastor with a recovery ministry at a Methodist church in Memphis and in 2011 he released his first album in 20 years called The Way.
