‘Splash’ will feature Channing Tatum as mermaid (or mer-man?)
As far as Hollywood remakes of ‘80s movies go, this one has a particularly foul stink to it. It seems that Channing Tatum will play a “mermaid” in a Disney remake of 1984’s Splash.
The Hollywood Reporter says the Splash remake, by Imagine’s Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, will flip the genders of the starring roles, placing Tatum in the fishier role originally played by Daryl Hannah while Jillian Bell (Workaholics) will play the human part previously occupied by Tom Hanks.
If the pairing of Tatum and Bell sounds familiar it’s because they co-starred in 22 Jump Street back in 2014. If the idea of a Hollywood remake sounds familiar, it’s because it’s happening far too often these days.
The idea of having a male mermaid for the Splash remake isn’t a complete surprise. Grazer bought a script called Merman back in 2009 and told CNBC back in June that the new movie would a different point of view. Still, we’re not sure why Tatum’s turning to remakes as the backbone of his career. Not enough mojo left for Magic Mike 3?
