The Genesis song 'Mama' was about what?!?
In 1983, Genesis released their self-titled 12th album that was covered in a recent "Albums of 1983" SIT80’s podcast series. Even though the album is considered a classic these days, the first single of the album, Mama, while a Top 10 hit in Europe, got off to a slow start peaking at only No. 73 on the U.S. singles chart.
Perhaps the poor chart performance for Mama in America was the subject matter. The song is about a teenage boy’s infatuation with an older prostitute. The video is memorable for Phil Collin’s crazed look and cackling during Tony Banks’ haunting keyboard passages. .
The next single by Genesis would fare better as That’s All would become their first Top 10 hit. By contrast the Invisible Touch album from 1986 would garner five Top 10 hits alone by the time its run concluded.
