Tuesday lost and found: OMD's 'Electricity'
If You Leave by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark is a signature song of the ‘80s that will never leave the radio. Long before the Pretty In Pink soundtrack, OMD was busy debuting on the UK charts with Electricity.
Recorded in 1979, Electricity was released under three different versions but finally cracked the UK Top 100 and peaked at No. 99 in the spring of 1980 and ended up being the version that ended up on the video and the self-titled debut album of OMD of the same year.
The song is about society's wasteful use of energy and the lack of development of alternative sources like solar power. Considering the focal sound of OMD is electronic and synthesized, it does seem a little ironic message from the lads.
OMD has released several albums over the last few years, including 2013's English Electric.
