Why 'Gabriel's Message' might be the most perfect holiday tune of the '80s
Before we scatter for the Christmas break and hear All I Want For Christmas for the thousandth time this holiday season, let's go back and listen to an '80s Christmas song that doesn't get much play on the Christmas stations - Gabriel's Message by Sting.
In 1987, A Very Special Christmas was released with an All Star cast of U2, Madonna and countless others with all the profits going to support the Special Olympics. Included on the album and highlighted in a SIT80s podcast Episode 277 on the 25th anniversary of A Very Special Christmas is Sting's Gabriel's Message.
Gabriel's Message is an European Christmas Carol that dates by to the late 1800s and is centered on the Book of Luke account in The Bible where Mary receives word from the angel Gabriel about her selection as the mother of Jesus. Sting also included Gabriel's Message as the B-side to his single Russians a few years back in 1985. The video for Gabriel's Message is stark black and white with little girls dressed in angel costumes dancing around a very solemn Sting in the fake snow.
A Very Special Christmas went on to sell more than 4 million copies and spawned about nine more Very Special Christmas albums.
