You got anything derogatory to say about Rocky II? Yeah, it's great

TODAY'S RETRO-REVIEW: Continuing our look at the Rocky franchise in honor of the newly release Creed, here's guest blogger Jim "Dr. Dim" Fitzsimons with a review of Rocky II (1979). Don't forget to listen to our new Rocky podcast episode, too.

THE PLOT: Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) has married Adrian (Talia Shire) and was a bit too free with the money he'd earned off the big fight in the first film, so he ends up scratching out a living at the meat packing plant. However, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) keeps publically pushing Rocky into a rematch; Rocky had declared himself retired, but he needed the money for Adrian and their unborn child, so reluctantly he returns to the ring.

MAYBE YOU REMEMBER: Stallone had hurt himself while lifting weights prior to filming the big fight. So, the fight was shot with an injured Stallone.

SURELY YOU DIDN'T FORGET: The reason Rocky retired was, due to having been beat up so severely by Creed in their first fight, he would risk blindness if he fought again. This was something the filmmakers wouldn't remember in the next four installments.

THE TUNES: There are two a cappella tunes provided by Stallone's brother Frank: Street Scat and Two Kinds of Love. A very hairy Frank Stallone appears in the film as part of a group of fellows hanging on the corner and singing out.

WHAT CRITICS SAID: Not everyone liked it... " As the characters go through their stock routines - Talia Shire shyly whispering ‘I love you,' Mr. Stallone making self-deprecating jokes, Burgess Meredith telling the kid he's either a bum or a hero - you get the feeling that you've been here before. Well, you have." - Janet Maslin, New York Times

WHY WE STILL LOVE IT: I think the answer to that is obvious: Rocky wins.

5. "I feel like a Kentucky Fried idiot."

4. "This man is dangerous? I'm dangerous! I'm dangerous!"

3. Reporter: "Rock, you got anything derogatory to say about the champ?"
Rocky: "Derogatory? Yeah. He's great."

2. "This guy don't just want to win, you know. He wants to bury you, he wants to humiliate you, he wants to prove to the world that you was nothing but some kind of a... a freak the first time out."

1. "Yo, Adrian, I did it!"
