Tebow's final game, Florida sunrise, foam mounds

5 January

It may look like snow, but that's fire-retardant foam that Juan Gonzalez is cleaning up on 5th Ave. S. in St. Petersburg in front of All Children's Hospital Friday morning. The foam came from testing the system that is designed to put out a fire on the roof's helipad in the event of a fire or fuel spill, according to the hospital's safety director Larry Green. "This is a sophisticated system with jets that cover the helipad in a 2-minute time frame," said Green. The non-hazardous, water-based foam was cleaned up by crews throughout the course of the morning. It will be the last time the system is tested, said Green. Last month a similar test sent foam floating through downtown St. Petersburg, prompting phone calls to the fire department from the curious. [LARA CERRI Times]

The sun peaks over the horizon as sprinklers coat strawberry plants with water to form a protective barrier of ice on the strawberry plants and their blooms at E.W. Simmons Farms in Dover. A layer of clouds came in late last night delaying growers from turning on the water, but early this morning the temps dropped quickly below freezing. The thermometer used by grower Billy Simmons was coated with ice and had a chilly reading of 28 degrees. More cold weather is on the way for the weekend. [SKIP O'ROURKE, Times]

Mary Miller of St. Petersburg stretches at sunrise in North Shore Park after riding her bicycle to the water, her daily morning ritual before she sits on a bench to work on her mystery series, "Birder Murder." Set in Florida, Miller's protagonist is a woman who lives or works (Miller hasn't decided which, yet,) in a lighthouse. Miller, a published author, has a daily goal of writing three pages of her murder mystery before heading off to Blanton Elementary School where she teaches reading. It's not about the bike ride there, Miller said of her writing routine. "It's hearing the birds," Miller said, "and the smell of the water" once she's there. [CHERIE DIEZ, Times]

Photographing the Space Shuttle launch

launch_300.jpg
Watching a space shuttle launch is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, even if it is from afar. It’s not just the moment of witnessing history unfold and feeling the rumble caused from the shuttle’s liftoff, it’s also the anticipation, the fingers-crossed feeling that the launch won’t be scrubbed and the effort to travel to Florida’s east coast wasn’t in vein. You’ll end up making wonderful memories from the entire experience of traveling, waiting and meeting the people who have come so far—as far as Australia and England in some cases. If you do make the trek to the Kennedy Space Center for the last two launches, here are a few tips on where to go for the best vantage point.
