All Eyes: Our photographers take great photos even when they’re asleep!

Lightning is seen behind the St. Petersburg Pier Thursday, August 20, 2015.

Lightning is seen behind the St. Petersburg Pier Thursday, August 20, 2015.

Sometime last Thursday while I was sleeping I made a pretty cool picture of a lightning strike behind the St. Petersburg Pier.

Cool, because I didn't even know there was a lightning storm. And cool because, well, I was sleeping.

My former boss Jack Sheppard had the idea of doing a time lapse of the Pier when they (finally) got around to demolishing it. He volunteered a great view from the window of his mother-in-law, Bonnie Rohrbaugh.

I set the camera up last week with a remote control that takes one picture every ten minutes. Those pictures will eventually become a time lapse video that will show the Pier coming down in about one minute.

Yesterday I stopped by Bonnie's condo to see if the camera was still clicking away. I pulled the pictures off to see how things were going and saw this one in the middle of several hundred nearly identical frames of the Pier taken over the course of six days.

Booya!

I guess if you take enough pictures of anything, lightning will eventually strike.

So keep on clicking Tampa Bay!

As a photo archivist, I am very interested in what makes a photo stand out for someone. If you asked ten different people to look at a group of photos and pick out their favorite, you might very well end up with ten different photos.

For me, one of the things that catches my eye is the play of light and shadow, the chiaroscuro of the photo, if you will. (In plain English, I'm a sucker for silhouettes and lighting contrasts.)

I just looked through a few hundred recent wire images and ended up selecting five of them as "postworthy." It was only after the fact that I noticed that they all featured shadows, silhouettes or sharp contrasts between light and dark.

Like I said, I'm a sucker for silhouettes.

All Eyes: Butterfly garden photos from Times photographer Jim Damaske

Tampa Bay Times photographer Jim Damaske visited the Florida Botanical Gardens on a recent Thursday morning, where a volunteer work crew (some are Master Gardeners) work in the newly expanded butterfly garden located on the Children's Trail. The garden has been expanded to 8,000 square feet, making it one of the largest open butterfly gardens in Florida. The trail includes fairy houses (small wooden structures) for the butterfly chrysalises, artwork, and musical instruments for the kids to play. "And the wonderful thing is it's free," said Liz Pearson a volunteer who designed the new garden area. The garden is pesticide free and recently lady bugs were released in the garden to combat aphids. Pearson says the garden is home to ten species of butterflies that are breeding there and another ten species have been visiting the garden, giving visitors the potential to see a variety of butterflies.

Hipstamatic photo of the Windlasses, a Dunedin-based women’s sailing club, getting their boats ready for their upcoming sailing season.

On Tuesday we posted an amazing lightning strike photo that Times photographer Jim Damaske shot with his iPhone.

Today we have some more iPhone photos from Jim. We'll let him explain:

"The other day I had an assignment to photograph the Windlasses, a Dunedin based womens sailing club, getting their boats ready for their upcoming sailing season. A couple days earlier I'd had lunch in a fish restaurant that had a lot of old black-and-white fishing and boat photos on the wall, which made me feel nostalgic for the old photography. When I went to the Windlasses assignment I decided to use a little modern technology in the form of the phone's Hipstamatic camera app - which can be set to create an old-style look to photos - to create some black-and-white photos for fun." …

Over the 11 days of the Iowa State Fair, 18 presidential candidates are expected to travel to Des Moines to press the flesh, make speeches and sample some of the 75 foods on a stick.

The fair “is the epitome of retail politicking,” Christopher Rants, a former speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives from Sioux City, told the New York Times. “It’s rural Iowa wrapped up and stuck into Des Moines.”

If the hopefuls are not admiring the famous cow made of butter, they can most likely be found behind the grill at the Iowa Pork Producers Pork Tent.

Timing is everything when photographing lightning

A massive bolt of lightning seen on I-4 heading into Tampa on Monday night.

JIM DAMASKE | Times

A massive bolt of lightning seen on I-4 heading into Tampa on Monday night.

We were approaching Tampa on I-4 straight into a storm.

There was a lot of lightning and it was very intense, the kind that makes you think; "I might be able to capture a photo of a lightning bolt." Of course the only camera available was the one on my phone which would make it difficult.

Fortunately, there was a bright bolt followed immediately by a huge blinding flash so when I pushed the shutter to capture the first bolt by the time it actually made an exposure it was perfectly timed to catch the whopper.

A lucky shot revealing the power of nature.

How they made it: fight against the state

Debbie Chin bumps foreheads with 6-month-old Amzi Chin on the floor at their house in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Thursday, Aug. 13. Debbie Chin and her spouse Kari are fighting to have their names put on the birth certificate of Amzi.

Debbie Chin bumps foreheads with 6-month-old Amzi Chin on the floor at their house in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Thursday, Aug. 13. Debbie Chin and her spouse Kari are fighting to have their names put on the birth certificate of Amzi.

I'm looking around their St. Petersburg home, inside their living room, as they play with their baby, Amzi Chin. Debbie Chin is on the floor looking at the 6 month old, as her spouse Kari talks with their other child, 2-year-old Eliada. Me, I'm crawling on the ground like a child myself, pushing against the cold tile to slide forward to get in closer to Debbie. Her child is playing with a ball and she is talking to him. Then I see it, a moment, an emotion, a bond between mother and child. She is bumping her head against her child's. She is smiling in a kind of blissful way. Amzi is mesmerized by her toy, a tranparent ball with a cartoonish-looking bird insde. I wanted to capture that frame, the warmth you could feel between them, while the light behind them illuminates this action. Them linking foreheads is a lot like the bond between them, and the love that Debbie feels for her child. Inside the photo there is this kind of frame they build around the center, somewhat like the frame of a house, a place ot call home. …
