"I think you just found your forever home," says Sylvia Slone to Sara, a 3-year-old "Heinz 57," as the dog climbed atop Slone and kissed her face at the SPCA Tampa Bay Friday, Dec. 2, 2016. Slone, of Pinellas Park, went with her grandson, Skylan Thompson, 22 months, to look for a dog during the SPCA Tampa Bay's Bringing Friends Together Forever: Fee-Waived Adoption Weekend. "I lost my husband last January... and I lost my mom the June before, so the house is really, really quiet. Everybody tells me I need a dog." All adoption fees this weekend are sponsored by Hill's Pet Nutrition. The shelter at 9099 130th Ave. N in Largo will have extended hours for the special, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. On Friday, 62 homeless animals found their way into a new home including 32 cats, 27 dogs, one rabbit and two goats. An average Friday sees 10 adoptions overall.
SPCA Tampa Bay is waiving all adoption fees this weekend. The shelter which is located at 9099 130th Ave. N in Largo has extended its regular hours to 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday in order to accomdate the expected high demand during the event.Full Story

Special Guest Speaker Brian Anderson, Co-Founder and Director of the Veterans Alternative. Brian retired from the United States Army after 14 years of service as both a journalist and a Green Beret. He Joined because of the events on September 11, 2001. Brian served 33 months in direct Combat and earned 3 bronze stars, one with Valor for his actions deployed as a Green Beret. Brian left Active Duty in 2012 and joined the National Guard. As a citizen soldier, Brian started to identify the gaps in services for many of our Veterans returning home. He helped form the Pasco County Stand Down, now known as the One Community Now Stand Down. He also co-founded the Veterans Alternative, a nonprofit , helping Combat Veterans using alternative modalities focused on Mindfulness and Resiliency. Live music was provided by Palm Harbor United Methodist Church choir and the Westlake Children's Choirand the Westlake Middle School Band.

Charlie Crist revived his political career Tuesday by winning a Pinellas County congressional seat that was held by Republicans for more than 60 years.
Crist, a former Republican governor running as a Democrat, beat incumbent Republican David Jolly by a relatively slim 52 percent to 48 percent margin, according to preliminary returns.
Crist's victory was just part of the local races that were decided in the 2016 election.Full Story
