Following All-American Kevin Knox

Players from both teams joke around outside their locker rooms after the McDonald's All-American game at the United Center in Chicago, Ill., on Wednesday, March 29, 2017.

Kevin Knox, a student at Tampa Catholic High School, is considered one of the top basketball recruits in the nation. His versatile skill set earned him a spot on the McDonald's All-American team. I had the chance to follow Knox during All-American week in Chicago, photographing practices, community events, a dunk contest and the big game itself.

The Chicago trip was part of a larger profile on Knox, for which I also attended local events around Tampa and spent time at the Knox home. Photographing an athlete away from the court or field is a challenge I'm always up for. While I love shooting sports action, getting behind the scenes and shadowing an athlete like Knox for an extended period of time allows for a more holistic visual understanding of the subject. An image of Knox on the court in Chicago competing with the best high school players in the country only speaks to part of his life. Seeing him at home, relaxing with family, is also integral to the young man he is.

This gallery provides an overview of my time working on our Kevin Knox profile, including images not seen in the story.

Most professional (and some college) sports teams host a media day each year. It's an opportunity to have new faces and veterans run through a gauntlet of quick tv interviews, radio hits, and photo sessions to kick off a new season.

Last fall, I saw the gifs that former Dallas Morning News photographer Gerry McCarthy did at Mavericks photo day and knew it was something I wanted to try. I did some research, and Gerry was kind enough to spend some time on the phone with me explaining his process, and some technical pitfalls to avoid.

The Tiny Home Festival was held Saturday in St. Petersburg.

The Tiny Home Festival held at the St. Petersburg Eco Village drew a large, sell-out crowd on Saturday, as people showed up to tour several "tiny homes," which are houses under 500 square feet. Tiny home enthusiasts are part of a movement toward smaller, less expensive and more energy efficient homes.

If you weren't able to get tickets, here's a look at what you missed.

Kevin Knox lingered on the sideline for a while as the rest of his teammates took turns scoring in the McDonald's All-American Game on Wednesday night.

Despite limited playing time, the Tampa Catholic forward made his presence known.

In the waning seconds of the first half, Knox raced down the United Center court. East teammate Colin Sexton put the ball behind his back before tossing a perfect alley-oop pass to Knox for a two-handed, buzzer-beating dunk.

Tampa Catholic's Kevin Knox is the latest. The 6-foot-9 forward, a consensus five-star recruit, will play in the McDonald's All-American Game on Wednesday at Chicago's United Center.

Knox realizes the magnitude of the moment. Michael Jordan played in this game. So did Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal.

"To me, this is the best event in high school basketball," said Knox, who has narrowed his list of colleges to Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina and Florida State, and is expected to announce his decision in mid April. "I'm really looking forward to it because it's the best of the best. Very few get selected for this game, and I'm happy that I did."

South Florida Bulls running back Marlon Mack (5) runs a drill during the USF Pro Day at Morsani Football Practice Complex at the University of South Florida in Tampa on Tuesday.

For the first half of USF's annual pro day, the two most prominent figures remained on the sideline. While nearly two-dozen of their old teammates lunged, leaped and lifted, Rodney Adams and Marlon Mack balked.

Few could blame them.

Less than three weeks after posting solid performance numbers at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, Adams and Mack opted not to gamble on tarnishing them Tuesday, participating only in position drills before a plethora of scouts at the Morsani Complex.

At least 20 NFL clubs were represented, with Bucs coach Dirk Koetter among the observers.
