In this 30-second exposure, a meteor streaks across the sky during the annual Perseid meteor shower Friday over Spruce Knob, W.Va.

The skies in the Northern Hemisphere were filled with meteors Thursday night and Friday morning.

The Perseids come around every year when Earth passes through the streams of dust and debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle.

This year, the peak was forecast to be particularly spectacular — the Perseids were in a rare outburst, according to NASA scientists.

#TBTimesGram Gallery: Love; Week 7 assignment: Faces

Of the hundreds and hundreds of snapshot moments I keep stored in my heart and mind, this is by far one of my favorites. This moment with my daughter ... it's so pure and beautiful. I think it captures a sweet innocence ... protected for now by us and her adolescent mind, body, and soul. I also see something kind and angelic and peaceful. It's, as any parent of a toddler will tell you, a welcomed contrast to the rambunctious, loud, independent, sassy, mini version of you (or in my case, my husband) that runs around the house like a wild chicken from dawn to dusk. Moments like these don't last very long so when they happen, I seize them. Oh this moment ... be still my heart. This is what I love. #TBTimesGram #love #gingerbaby #toddler #toddlerlife #thingsilove #sleepingbaby

The Chihuly Collection will reopen in its new location at 720 Central Ave. on Oct. 15, said executive director Andy Schlauch, after the galleries on Beach Drive closed Sunday.

The collection of spectacular vessels and sculptures by Dale Chihuly, the most famous glass artist in the world, will now occupy 11,000 square feet of indoor space, plus 4,000 square feet of outdoor space for parties and events such as weddings. Next door will be a Publix supermarket and above will be three parking decks.

A team from Seattle, where Chihuly's studio is located, is dismantling and packing the vessels and sculptures. The process includes taking apart hundreds of vibrantly colored glass pieces that make up the large, intricate sculptures and will take about two weeks.

Photo gallery: Contents of Plant City's iconic Red Rose Inn to be auctioned

The contents of the Red Rose Inn, including chairs, tables and couches are piled up in the lounge of the iconic Plant City hotel. The complex is being converted into a drug and alcohol addiction clinic and everything will be auctioned off on Aug. 6.

JAMES BORCHUCK | Times

The contents of the Red Rose Inn, including chairs, tables and couches are piled up in the lounge of the iconic Plant City hotel. The complex is being converted into a drug and alcohol addiction clinic and everything will be auctioned off on Aug. 6.

Once, visiting Plant City's Red Rose Inn & Suites was like walking into a scene from Gone With the Wind.

The ballroom, restaurant and lounge captured the Civil War era backdrop of a tale told through book and film. And while most of the 261 rooms had typical modern designs, 28 VIP suites adopted Gone With the Wind's graceful Victorian motif.

Some were named for Rhett Butler, Ashley Wilkes and Scarlett O'Hara and adorned with artwork depicting the characters.

The inn has been closed for four years, but bidders can snatch up the furnishings at auction on a rescheduled date. On Tuesday, August 2, Harris Auctions, Inc. announced a postponement of the auction, posting on their web site, "The enormous task of renovating this 261 room hotel at the same time trying to conduct an auction liquidation, forced the cancellation of the auction at this time. Call (813) 784-3926 if you have any questions and we will post the rescheduled date as soon as it is determined."

UPDATE: This story has been edited to reflect a change in the auction's date.

Hillary Clinton became the first woman nominated for the president of the United States by a major political party Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. There were not only tears of celebration but protest. "I move that all votes, all votes cast by delegates be reflected in the official record and I move that Hillary Clinton be selected as the nominee of the Democratic Party for president of the United States," Sen. Bernie Sanders said. His effort to unite the party could not keep some supporters from walking out of the convention in protest. Politicians, advocates and celebrities such as Alicia Keys and actors Meryl Streep, Tony Goldwyn, Debra Messing, Erika Alexander and Elizabeth Banks also were on hand, making for an historic night in the City of Brotherly Love.

All Eyes gallery: A movable feast for the mouth and the eyes

Dessert at Provisions next door to Rebecca's at City Market in Dade City, was the last stop with three kinds of panna cotta paired with moscato or milk chocolate porter.

LARA CERRI | Times

Dessert at Provisions next door to Rebecca's at City Market in Dade City, was the last stop with three kinds of panna cotta paired with moscato or milk chocolate porter.

A thunderstorm dropped rain on roads so hot they steamed. As the clouds dispersed, a low, golden sun came out, casting dramatic light on the orange groves. Spanish moss glowed on oak trees; the red heads of leggy sandhill cranes pecked at the ground.

It was another slow summer evening along the rolling country roads of eastern Pasco County.

This was the scene Thursday as 80 diners traveled between Pearl in the Grove and three other restaurants owned by Curtis Beebe and his wife, Rebecca.

The couple’s debut “go at your own pace” progressive dinner had sold out quickly.

Appetizers were served at Local Public House in San Antonio, a casual, laid-back pub with a commitment to local fare. The next course was lionfish bouillabaisse at Pearl in the Grove followed by steak and scallop dinner at Rebecca’s at City Market. The feast finished with three flavors of panna cotta at Provisions. The last three restaurants are all in Dade City.

Each plate was paired with wine or beer choices that included Tozai Snow Maiden sake and JDub’s Bell Cow Milk Chocolate Porter.  …

Photo gallery: Bold looks at the Republican National Convention

TNS/The Philadelphia Inquirer

Go big or go home. That seemed to be the overwhelming sentiment when it came to dressing for the Republican National Convention this week in Cleveland.

To stand out, delegates and guests wore everything from Revolutionary War-era military uniforms to Donald Trump wigs to elephant hats to Superman capes. Campaign buttons adorned hats, shirts and ears. The stars and stripes accessorized everything, from heads to, literally, toes.

One attendee dressed as Abraham Lincoln. Another wore a Hillary Clinton mask, handcuffs and prison overalls.

No outfit was too outlandish, as long as it was red, white and blue. Well, except for the Pittsburgh Steelers fan who couldn't leave her black and gold at home.

Here are some of the looks that caught our eyes.
