Making this picture made me remember a quote I heard my friend and former colleague at the Times, photojournalist Ricardo Ferro, say once - "I can tell how enthusiastic I was about pictures on any day by how many u-turns I made." I was driving, on my way home from an assignment, and I saw this picture through the trees. I drove a couple blocks, slowing down, hesitating on stopping. It was too beautiful to pass up. I turned around and made the picture in this fantastic light which was almost gone by the time I got out of my car. - Douglas R. Clifford
