About this gallery

Judging recently concluded for the 55th annual World Press photo contest.

101,254 photos were submitted to the contest this year, representing 5247 participating photographers and 124 nationalitites.

All the prize-winning photographs are assembled into an exhibition that travels to 45 countries over the course of a year, and published in a yearbook. Over two million people go to a hundred different venues to see the images, and a yearbook is published in seven languages and distributed worldwide.

The contest is judged by leading experts in visual journalism who represent various aspects of the profession. The composition of the jury is changed from year to year, they operate independently, and a secretary who has no vote safeguards the judging procedure.

Photographing the Space Shuttle launch

launch_300.jpg
Watching a space shuttle launch is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, even if it is from afar. It’s not just the moment of witnessing history unfold and feeling the rumble caused from the shuttle’s liftoff, it’s also the anticipation, the fingers-crossed feeling that the launch won’t be scrubbed and the effort to travel to Florida’s east coast wasn’t in vein. You’ll end up making wonderful memories from the entire experience of traveling, waiting and meeting the people who have come so far—as far as Australia and England in some cases. If you do make the trek to the Kennedy Space Center for the last two launches, here are a few tips on where to go for the best vantage point.
