Tiger eye, captured python, Buccaneers in London

Tiger_eye

A beam of light from the microscope shines down on a now healthy, clear tiger eye, after the cloudy cataract was removed. Veterinary opthamologist Dr. Michele Stengard successfully performed cataract surgery on Princess Tiger Lily, a 14-week-old tiger cub, removing the defective lens through a small corneal incision and a surgical process called phacoemulsification at Florida Veterinary Specialists Wednesday morning. "Cataract removal is one of the most difficult surgeries, but it's also the most rewarding because the improvement in the quality of their life is amazing and instantaneous," said Dr. Stengard. She has done the surgery hundreds of times before on dogs and cats, but "this was a first," she said of operating on a tiger's eye. "It was challenging because of the differences in anatomy and structure." VIEW MORE PHOTOS OF THE TIGER [MELISSA LYTTLE, Times] ... Read more

Photographing the Space Shuttle launch

launch_300.jpg
Watching a space shuttle launch is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, even if it is from afar. It’s not just the moment of witnessing history unfold and feeling the rumble caused from the shuttle’s liftoff, it’s also the anticipation, the fingers-crossed feeling that the launch won’t be scrubbed and the effort to travel to Florida’s east coast wasn’t in vein. You’ll end up making wonderful memories from the entire experience of traveling, waiting and meeting the people who have come so far—as far as Australia and England in some cases. If you do make the trek to the Kennedy Space Center for the last two launches, here are a few tips on where to go for the best vantage point.
