Basket

Atop the table, the sawgrass found basket

held its sleeping promise silently, light

against the heavy chains of summer

awaiting another Fall and some monumental march toward history.

Photo exhibit: Ryan Mitchell and experiential photography

28 March

In February 2010, we featured photos by Pinellas Park firefighter/paramedic Ryan Mitchell, who worked on a medical relief deployment in Haiti following the devastating earthquake there.  Since then, Ryan has spent more time traveling abroad and documented his experiences with his camera.  His photos will be featured in a free exhibit at Kahwa Coffee South (212 2nd St. S) in St. Petersburg from Saturday, April 7 through the end of the month.  The opening night, featuring Ethiopian and Indian food and Argentinian wine, will be April 7 from 7-10 pm.  We talked with Ryan about the exhibit and about his travels.

1. It looks like you have traveled quite a bit since our previous interview about your trip to Haiti. Where have you traveled, and what took you to those places?

We went to India, Ethiopia, and Argentine Patagonia.

Terri Gross in Cuba

8 March

Tampa Bay area resident and avid photographer Terri Gross recently traveled to Cuba. We talked with her about her experiences there.

Q: What drew you to travel to Cuba?

A: Well it was actually my second time to Cuba. I was in Havana 57 years ago in my mother’s tummy. My parents and grandparents vacationed there often in the mid 1950s. Over the years I’ve heard many stories and seen many photos of glamorous times and I wanted to see for myself. So I guess the mystique about Cuba and the opportunity to go on a people-to-people cultural exchange program sponsored by Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and Cuba Cultural Travel lured me there.

Photo exhibit: Central Avenue

5 January

The Florida Photographic Collaborative (FPC), a group of ten Tampa Bay area photographers founded in 2009, has self-published a book titled "The Central Avenue Project," which documents the architecture and culture along Central Avenue in St. Petersburg.  In the FPC's words: "Walk any stretch of Central Avenue and you will find richness and diversity, quirky characters, fantastic restaurants, eclectic architecture, tireless business owners, and just plain unique moments in the life of everyday St. Petersburg.  These ingredients provide rich ground for any photographer.  And so, the photographers of the FPC are eager to represent the many facets of Central Avenue through their lenses."

The FPC will present an exhibit of their photos at the St. Petersburg Museum of History, with an opening on Saturday, January 21, from 2-4 pm. The exhibit will run for about three months, but the closing date is yet to be determined. In the meantime, learn a bit about the participating photographers through their images and bios above. Visit the Museum of History website for more info.

Happy Thanksgiving from St. Pete Beach

There is a group of trees on the Pass-a-Grille channel, just north of Merry Pier, that make up this turkey. It must be seen from Tierra Verde, looking across the water. Here, the setting sun illuminates the bird's shape. Happy Thanksgiving! [Photo by Laura D. Singer]

Reflection Abstract 80

Q:  One of your photos won the Best-in-show award at this year's FMoPA Members' Show.  Tell me about that photo.

A:  Reflection Abstract 80 is a photograph of reflections on rippling water. A slow shutter speed was used which allows the reflections to expand and take on
a 3D appearance. I was captivated by the various expressions of reflected light. The orange color are rocks lit by sunlight through the brown water. The
white ribbon like reflection is from the sky. The whirling cloud like reflection is from a pylon of a bridge. I see the water as a canvas. The reflections
as pigment and the wind as a brush. The ambiguity of the composition has an abstract expressionist quality. Ripples create the depth and sense of movement;
the wave theory in physics is being expressed visually. Metaphorically the water/canvas is consciousness. The ripples and light are form dancing on the
surface of consciousness or our perceived phenomenal reality. The water, like consciousness, is not directly perceived. It being the canvas which is painted
over or as the emptiness that holds form in suspension. ... Read more

Photographing the Space Shuttle launch

launch_300.jpg
Watching a space shuttle launch is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, even if it is from afar. It’s not just the moment of witnessing history unfold and feeling the rumble caused from the shuttle’s liftoff, it’s also the anticipation, the fingers-crossed feeling that the launch won’t be scrubbed and the effort to travel to Florida’s east coast wasn’t in vein. You’ll end up making wonderful memories from the entire experience of traveling, waiting and meeting the people who have come so far—as far as Australia and England in some cases. If you do make the trek to the Kennedy Space Center for the last two launches, here are a few tips on where to go for the best vantage point.
