Unions back Hanisee in Pinellas DEC race

The Florida Gulf Coast Building and Construction Trades Council, which represents unionized bricklayers, carpenters, roofers, ironworkers and others in the region, has endorsed Mark Hanisee to lead the Pinellas Democratic Executive Committee.

Hanisee, the party's treasurer, faces Ramsay McLauchlan and Jack Killingsworth in the election, which will be held tomorrow.

"Mark's hard work and dedication has put us in a position to dominate Pinellas politics for the next several years under his leadership," said Ed Dees, the council's past president, in a news release from Hanisee.

On Nov. 24, state Sen. Charlie Justice endorsed McLauchlan. In the release, Hanisee includes part of a private e-mail from Justice.

"I apologize that my support of Ramsay for the DEC chair made it to the e-mail lists and blogs before I had a chance to get with you," it reads. "My support of his selection is just that, support for him. It is not a negative endorsement of you, and I have spoken very highly of you to anyone who has asked."
