Activist enters District 6 Tampa City Council race

Activist and independent journalist Kelly Benjamin on Monday filed to run for Tampa's District 6 City Council seat. The district covers West Tampa and some of Seminole Heights. Charlie Miranda currently holds the post. Benjamin ran for City Council in 2003, losing to Rose Ferlita. Benjamin has worked as an elementary school teacher and college English instructor. On Saturday, he received a Peace Award from community radio station WMNF-FM.

In an e-mail Benjamin said he wants to be a progressive voice on the council. "I'd like to see a community-led response to the economic contraction we're facing," he said. "Decades of unsustainable economic growth is (thankfully) coming to an end. I want to be a voice on the council that helps guide this city in a new direction with one particular emphasis: keeping it LOCAL -- as I see the salient fact about our current predicament as a society is that things must become increasingly local, whether we like it or not."
