Tampa city officials are testing the water in the Davis Islands channel as a precaution after a small sewage spill Sunday and early Monday dumped about 7,200 gallons into the waterway about halfway down the wedge-shaped island.
Sewage officials discovered a leak in a 16-inch pipe about 4 p.m. Sunday, which was contained by about 3:15 a.m. Monday, said the city's wastewater director Eric Weiss.
The untreated sewage leak occurred near a pump station at 501 Suwanee Circle.
A contractor is working on the leak, which should be repaired by Friday. Preliminary bacteria testing results should be available Tuesday, Weiss said.
The dog park and beach will be closed until at least then as a precaution, Weiss said.
