Ban on cat and dog sales in St. Pete pet stores?
St. Petersburg City Council member Karl Nurse floated an idea on social media Sunday: a ban on the sale of cats and dogs in city pet stores.
"Friends, Please give me some feedback on this. I know that about half the dogs and a majority of cats at the shelters in Pinellas County are killed. I have no idea it the citizens of St. Petersburg are willing to take this step to save the animals in the shelters and block the retail sales," Nurse wrote on Facebook.
About a dozen responses indicated support for the idea.
Nurse linked to news of Boston's recent ban of commercially-bred dogs, cats and rabbits in that city's pet stores.
The article said that Arizona has also recently decreed that all dogs sold in pet stores should come from shelters.
Nurse hasn't formally introduced the measure yet.
