Berger to receive two more honors
Dottie Berger MacKinnon is slated to pick up two new honors. Hillsborough County commissioners plan to recognize her May 4 with their 2011 Ellsworth G. Simmons Good Government Award. Two days later the League of Women Voters of Hillsborough County is scheduled to present her with its 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award. Berger once served on the County Commission and for years has championed causes helping abused and neglected children. Several groups have recognized her in recent months after the breast cancer survivor was diagnosed with cancer of the bile duct. In February, the Tampa Metro Civitan Club named Berger and her husband, Sandy MacKinnon, citizens of the year at the Governor's Day Luncheon at the Florida State Fair. That same month, plans for a bronze cast featuring Berger MacKinnon reading to a child were unveiled at A Kid's Place, a center she founded as a temporary residence for children rescued from abusive homes.
