Beyrouti: Record haul from Pinellas Lincoln Day Dinner

Saturday's annual Lincoln Day Dinner brought in a record amount of cash and attendees, Pinellas County Republican Party Chairman J.J. Beyrouti said Wednesday.

The dinner, which featured U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young's re-election announcement, raised more than $120,000 for the party, Beyrouti said. The party expects the event to cost $35,000. About 550 people attended, which is 100 more than normal, he said.

That fundraising margin would be good news for the Pinellas GOP. Over the past year, donations had fallen as they have for other county parties. But the local GOP increased its spending, lowering its financial advantage over the county Democrats. Beyrouti cut spending on rent and utilities in the latter part of 2009.

With the Times' story still on his mind, Beyrouti said: "I’m sure you think we can’t raise money, but that’s okay. That’s your genius reporting."

Pinellas Democrats have their Kennedy-King Dinner at the same Hilton hotel in Carillon. Party Chairman Ramsay McLauchlan said about 200 tickets have been sold. The featured speaker is gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink, Florida's CFO.
