Bicycling group to honor Mary Mulhern and Janet Cruz

Tampa City Council today voted to support a bicycle safety plan for the county. The move comes on the heels of seven bicycling deaths in recent months in the Tampa Bay area. Alan Snel, founder of the bicycling advocacy group Swifbud, told the council the group will honor council member Mary Mulhern with a "Swifbuddy" award at its Bike Bash on Nov. 7. Snel said the group credits Mulhern with bringing the bike safety proposal to the council. Six others will also get Swifbuddy honors. Among them: State Rep. Janet Cruz who Snel says was the only elected official to attend a memorial ride for bicyclists killed by motorists.
